Any time I hear "but China is homophobic!!!" I think about how Shen Yun (Falun Gong/Dafa propaganda outlet, they hate the CCP) features songs penned about five minutes ago about how being gay is the devil's work

@Colophonscrawl hm its almost like chinese society, like many societies all over the world, has a problem in the modern day with homophobia and it's not unique to the Communi- aaugh!

sorry, i got a little zap from my New York Times Editorial Collar. it hurts me every time I express an opinion that wouldn't be read in the pages of the NYT. it's important to keep perspective!

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet @Colophonscrawl huh, i wonder where that could have come from

According to certain studies by the University of London,[2] homosexuality was regarded as a normal facet of life in China, prior to Western influence from 1840 onwards.[3] Several early Chinese emperors are speculated to have had homosexual relationships accompanied by heterosexual ones.[4] Opposition to homosexuality, according to these same studies, did not become firmly established in China until the 19th and 20th centuries, through the Westernization efforts of the late Qing dynasty and the early Chinese Republic.

@zorotl @Colophonscrawl yeah there was certainly a bit of endemic homophobia in Chinese culture before colonization so it's not one of those cases where it's purely a foreign import, but, as with many things, colonization made it exponentially worse
