"Commemorating 9/11 doesn’t have anything to do with people who died that day. It’s about promoting a myth of a victimized and unified country whose subsequent and ongoing invasions, torture and drone wars can be justified as necessary and even moral acts.

9/11 is memorialized to renew a national identity that simultaneously accepts & glorifies, yet also disavows, imperialism. Its visibility while actual ongoing US wars go unacknowledged reflects the US as a total war society that is also paradoxically “at peace”

Put another way, it’s less that Americans “forget” everyone who died, lost loved ones, or were displaced in the countries bombed and destabilized in the wake of 9/11, and more that 9/11 is commemorated precisely in order to render everyone else forgettable"
