cant wait to see how free market ideologists twist their brains in knots to deny the plain fact that China, one of the most populous nations on the planet, has contained this virus so effectively that they are now exporting doctors and medical equipment to help manage the pandemic in exponentially smaller nations with unplanned economies

covid pol

what the planned economy did: immediate quarantines, construction of temporary hospitals, development of a test for the virus, immediate ramp up of production on antiviral medication, vaccine research

what the free market did: fuck up the supply chain for the production of tests so nobody can do them, everyone panic buys toilet paper

@dankwraith i can already hear my preachy republican/libertarian coworkers coyly saying "well if thEIr resPONsE was sO goOD WHy is thE viRUs EvEryWHeRe nOw?"

covid pol

@dankwraith Lol and Cuba is exporting doctors to all of the Caribbean right now

@dankwraith

a cool thing is that you could even have a planned economy without massive authoritarianism, imagine that

instead we get free market nonsense + authoritarianism, the most galaxy brain concept of politics possible

covid pol

@dankwraith It's all trade-offs though. China has reeducation camps for certain minority populations, they have no free speech, their Internet is contained, their lack of control over selling illegal animals at We Markets led to this disease getting into humans. Even what we see from China now is filtered and controlled.

The US response has been shit as well. EU and South Korea seems to be handling this the best. It really has nothing to do with free markets; just incompetence.

re: covid pol

@djsumdog @dankwraith EU is handling it well? lol no

re: covid pol

@dankwraith china is very far from a planned economy, they are extremely capitalist in their regular life with large tech corporations having lots of power, but they have a strong government overseeing it all and acting when something happens they don't like

re: covid pol

@dankwraith
china stopped being poor when they gave up on communism and went for a free market instead, and they're actually better at it than the west. authoritarian government is the perfect steward for a free market, ensuring a strong boundary to keep foreign megacorps out and throwing huge stipends to things actually-most-beneficial rather than who-lobbies-the-loudest

too bad such authoritarianism also leads to zero privacy / speech-freedom and murders lots of minority / at-risk / dissenting populations...
