plastics: incredibly durable and airtight material, almost immune to breakdown
capitalism: lets use this for disposable packaging
straw ban discussion
@dankwraith Also the plastic straw ban is so bad, the problem would be nearly solved if stores were required to make them optional, but no, we completely ban an item which many disabled people need, and even extend the ban to private purchase. It would have been much more useful if fast food places were required to serve food and drinks for customers eating inside in regular glasses and plates.
@dankwraith This though. The problem isn't plastic itself, it's using potentially reusable items only once. The push for more durable bags or paper bags is even counterproductive if people still only use them once since they take more resources than a lightweight plastic bag (which could be used a few times and not just once, actually).
